In October 2001, Cal Ripken, Jr., the longtime shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles and baseball's "Iron Man" retired from baseball. 2001 marked his 21st season with the Baltimore Orioles. On September 6, 1995, he surpassed the record held by Yankee Lou Gehrig of 2130 consecutive regular season games played. He most recently achieved the world record of 2216 consecutive regular season games played on June 14, 1996, a record previously held by Sachio Kinugasa, former third baseman for the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's Central League. However on Sunday, September 20, 1998, the streak ended. After being in every Orioles regular season lineup since May 30, 1982, Cal finally requested a day off. This ends his streak at 2632 games.
